The Sand Creek Regional Greenway (SCRG) has come a long way since its opening in 2002. The Greenway runs through Aurora, Denver at Stapleton, and southern Commerce City, and completes a loop of 50 miles of off-street urban trails in the metro Denver area. The trail is paved in Commerce City and crusher fine/soft surface in Denver and Aurora.
We currently have three trailheads in each city with parking lots that are accessible to both cars and horse trailers. There are several large kiosks and educational signs along the trail in Aurora and Commerce City that contain trail maps, general trail information, and informative narratives in both English and Spanish.
We are currently fundraising for trail improvements in all three cities. These improvements include building a paved trail next to the unpaved trail in the Denver section; constructing an underpass at the 47th Avenue bridge; building a trail link to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Center; completing Westerly Creek North Park, our signature park in Denver; extending the trail in Aurora; building more bathrooms and amenities along the trail; increasing access to the trail by providing more neighborhoods with trail links to the Greenway in all three cities; and building new trailheads to accommodate more cars and horse trailers. |
Two New Programs for Community Involvement |
The SCRGP created two new programs in 2010/2011 thanks to a grant from REI, a generous partner over the years.
Next Generation Partners is an outreach program for lower income, at-risk middle and high school students who live along the Greenway in southern Commerce City, northeast Denver and northwest Aurora. Since beginning the program in early 2011, we have worked with eight in-school, after-school and summer camp groups to provide 150 at-risk youth with environmental education, outdoor recreation and volunteer opportunities.
Each group of participating students meets once a month for at least two hours on the Greenway. Each session provides students with an educational talk from a guest speaker, followed by an outdoor activity and a volunteer project. Volunteer opportunities include picking up litter, painting over graffiti, and removing invasive species. Recreational activities include animal tracking games, nature walks, and bike rides.

| The Neighborhood Partners Environmental Team is the SCRGP's first monthly volunteer group, made up of neighbors who live along the Greenway in Commerce City, Denver and Aurora. We have partnered with Westerly Creek and the Bluff Lake Nature Center for our monthly volunteer days. There are currently 50 volunteers on the NPET team, and we have over 300 volunteers in our database. Since our first event in March 2011, we have logged over 1,000 volunteer hours. |

Dear Trail Supporter,
My first day on Sand Creek was filled with mud, crawdads, and friends. I was nine and living near Fitzsimons Medical Center. My best day on Sand Creek way July 2002 when we opened the trail to the first cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders.
That day was almost ten years ago--and in those ten years many wonderful changes have occurred along Sand Creek.
We have a trail extending for nearly 14 miles--and we hope to double the length of the trail in the next five years. We have one last underpass to build, which will be completed in 2012, so bike riders can go all the way--of road--from the South Platte Greenway to the High Line Canal trail. We have beautiful parks in Commerce City and Aurora, and plans to build a signature park for Denver in the next five years. Thousands of people use our trail and the popularity of the trail will increase when we build parallel trails--one paved and one unpaved--in Denver in the next five years.
New trail connections to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Lowry, north into Commerce City, and south toward Aurora Reservoir are all part of our future. We have the support of our wonderful communities--Aurora, Commerce City, and Denver--as well as the generous support of our business and non-profit neighbors along the Greenway. We have over 200 active volunteers and hundreds of generous individual and family donors.
In 2012, we will celebrate ten wonderful years of providing the only off-road, east/west connection in the northeast area of the Metro region. We link over 100 miles of rural, suburban and urban trails for bicyclists, runners, horseback riders, and dog walkers.
Please join us in celebrating ten great years of progress--and help us continue the great work by giving the next generation an even better Wilderness in the City.

Dear Sand Creek Regional Greenway User:
One hundred flowers; one hundred cottonwood trees; one hundred egrets, ducks, and herons; one hundred deer, fox, and beaver; one hundred hawks and eagles.
|
More than one hundred bicycle commuters daily; more than one hundred school children visiting Sand Creek monthly; more than one hundred happy volunteers at our annual REI day; and many more than one hundred thank yous for all the generous support.
Twenty years ago, it was five people who had the vision to make Sand Creek the premier greenway in the northeast region. Now it is hundreds of people who volunteer, donate, and use the trail every day. Not even the volunteer founders--Rene' Bullock, Pat McClearn, Beth Conover, Nadine Caldwell, and Happy Haynes--could have imagined how appreciated and loved the Sand Creek Regional Greenway has become.
The hundreds of people who have served on the board of directors, given vital donations, served as staff, and pulled weeds, planted trees, and just smiled when they saw an eagle in February, all deserve the credit and the thanks for the wonderful greenway.
My job is easy--to thank everyone and everything that makes this wonderful place possible. The Greenway would not exist today if it was not for the early visionaries, the steady donors, the tireless volunteers, and, of course, the beautiful place we call the Sand Creek Regional Greenway.

Kate Kramer
Executive Director

A Few Testimonials From Trail Users....
"I grew up in Aurora and used to walk/bike through Stapleton... to go to Sand Creek. I absolutely love seeing how the Greenway has made Sand creek a lovely recreational area again for hikers, bicyclists, horse riders and families. I commend you all for your good work!"
"I love the Greenway. It is nice to have a trail to walk or ride that is a little bit of nature in the middle of the city. I like seeing wildlife, and it's also nice to have somewhere to walk/ride that is not close to motor vehicles."
"The efforts from Sand Creek Regional Greenway will benefit the people who live and work in Commerce City for years to come. The effort and professionalism of your organization are to be commended." |
