Aspen Edge(tm), Coors' low-carb light lager, and the American Hiking Society, the only national organization dedicated to establishing, protecting, and maintaining America's foot trails, have named Denver's Sand Creek Greenway Trail one of the top 10 fitness trails in the United States. A bicyclist zips by below rush-hour traffic on Speer Boulevard. An in-line skater whizzes through the woods in Arvada. Walkers stroll the High Line Canal. A triathlete trains on the hills alongside busy C-470, safe from the thousands of vehicles rumbling past.
More than 300 miles of off-road paths loop and wind through the metro area, from Westminster to Parker, Commerce City to Highlands Ranch, Golden to Aurora. New paths continue to be developed and old ones extended, making a regional trail system that now links nearly 40 jurisdictions. more...
Best of Denver ® 2005:
Best Bikeway in Progress, Sand Creek Regional Greenway

Slowly but surely, the pieces for this thirteen-mile route that cross the old Stapleton Airport site are filling in. Eventually, the soft-surface trail, which is open to non- motorized vehicles only, will connect part of a fifty-mile loop of urban trails, going from the High Line Canal Bikeway in Aurora to the Platte River Greenway. Riders have to adapt to some construction sites, but backers insist that there is light at the end of the tunnel -- and plenty of room to roam in the future.

From "The Road Less Traveled: Off the beaten path. An
urban adventure in Commerce City." by Tom Winter
"....Still,
as we plunged deeper into the heart of the city, we had to
admit that the refinery was impressive. A mysterious collection
of pipes, tanks, and gleaming towers, the plant fumed and
smoked. Farther on, slivers of green held secrets of their
own. Foxes, egrets, and other birds hid in the tangled growth
adjacent to Sand Creek and a bum slept peacefully under a
bridge. What had appeared to be a lonely, dangerous place
was surprisingly beautiful, and the sudden realization that
we had discovered an unlikely juxtaposition between the urban
and natural made it all the more intriguing. ....."
