3rd Annual Sand Creek Mural Festival
Mark your calendars for a vibrant day of art, music, and community as we celebrate the launch of the newest mural on the Sand Creek Art Walk!
Whether you're a seasoned artist or just love getting creative, this festival is for EVERYONE. Join us for a guided paint-by-numbers activity where you'll help our featured mural artist lay the colorful foundation for a 250 foot long masterpiece!
After making your mark, connect with local organizations, grab a bite, and unwind with a refreshing drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available). Art and nature activities for kids will be available and a live DJ will keep the energy up with music all day long!

Bird Walk with Denver Field Ornithologists & Denver Audubon
Join SCRGP staff, Denver Field Ornithologists, and Denver Audubon for a relaxing bird walk along the Greenway during the fall migration season! Become a community scientist and help us gather data on what kinds of birds visit the Greenway during the summer. No previous birding experience necessary.

Aquatic Macroinvertebrates: Water Bugs
Join SCRGP staff and water expert Jordan Parmen (Metro Water Recovery) to become a community scientist! Help us collect and identify the bugs who live in the Sand Creek. To get a more detailed picture of the aquatic life in the creek, the samples we take will be sent to RiverWatch, a statewide volunteer water quality monitoring program that the SCRGP is a part of.

Nature Photography: Miniatures
Pick up a camera, get outside, and join the SCRGP and local photographer Lauren Keller for a fun morning of taking pictures of miniature creatures along the Greenway.
The SCRGP has five DSLR cameras available for participants to use during programming. The first 5 people to sign up will get access to these cameras. If you have your own camera and would like to participate you are welcome to as well!

Hawk Talk
Come out to the Greenway to join SCRGP as we partner with Nature’s Educators to provide a live bird presentation and bird walk. Learn about and interact with three hawks and then head out onto the trail to see if we can spot any birds in-action along the Sand Creek.

December Volunteer Day

Join us for our December Volunteer Work Day in Commerce City at Wetland Loop Trailhead as we will be wrapping and re-wrapping native trees in metal wiring to prevent beavers from chewing on them. Specific project details will be sent out to registered participants via email before the event.

Help Us Create a Clean Canvas! 🎨🧽
Before our next mural can bring the final stretch Sand Creek Art Walk’s north wall to life, it needs a little love—and that’s where you come in! Join us for a hands-on volunteer event to help scrape, brush, and prep a massive 250-foot-long wall that will soon become a vibrant work of public art.
We’ll provide the tools and snacks—you bring your energy, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and a willingness to get a little dusty.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of the mural-making process before the first drop of paint hits the wall at the Mural Festival, coming up on September 13.
Join us for this hands-on event and help create a clean canvas for the artist to work their magic!

This year marks a major milestone for the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership—our 25th anniversary! Join us for a special 21+ evening of live music, performances, dinner, drinks, and community connection as we celebrate the impact we’ve made together over the past quarter-century.
A Night on the Greenway is our only true fundraising event of the year, raising essential funds that directly support:
Installation of the 25th anniversary Sand Creek Art Walk mural (to be unveiled at the event with special early bird mural print pricing available only during the event)
Installation and maintenance of Greenway enhancements (bike racks, signage, graffiti removal, etc…)
Stewardship of Greenway wildlife and habitat through continued trash removal, seed dispersal, and education efforts.

Join us for a bug-themed Nature Pop-Up at Bluff Lake’s Family Nature Adventure Day! Check out our table to learn more about the bugs that live around the Sand Creek, get information about our upcoming programs, and participate in a brief kid-friendly nature activity. We hope to see you there!
Our HAVANA PEDESTRIAN ENTRANCE is directly adjacent from Florence Way crosswalk. The Havana Pedestrian Entrance will be a permanent entrance, and will provide greater access to the site for our neighbors to the north and west.

Nature Photography: BioBlitz
Join SCRGP for a BioBlitz and Nature Photography program! A BioBlitz is an event when scientists, naturalists, and community members work together over a short time period to identify and record species of plants, animals, fungi, and other living organisms in a certain location. Learn how to use your camera to take photos of the living and non-living things that make up our Sand Creek community while helping us collect data.

Nature Journaling: Pollinators and Watercolors
Join us and local artist Faith Williams to fill your own nature journal with colorful watercolor paintings of your favorite pollinators and plants! No previous experience necessary. We will provide a journal for all participants and all other materials necessary to decorate.

Nature Journaling: Pollinators and Charcoal Drawing
Decorate your own nature journal provided by us! Join SCRGP staff and local artist Faith Williams to learn how to use charcoal to create unique drawings of the local pollinators we can find at our pollinator garden in Commerce City. No previous art experience required. We will provide a nature journal to each participant with all necessary supplies to decorate.

June Playdate on the Greenway (Waitlist/ Lista de Espera)
This month we will visit Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge located at 6550 Gateway Road, Commerce City, CO 80022. Join us for a special program with Urban Park Ranger Isis Rivera Lopez. She will teach us about black-footed farrets, the history of the wildlife refuge and take us on a nature walk around Lake Mary! Spots are limited and will fill up fast! Registration required.
Este mes visitaremos Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge ubicado en 6550 Gateway Road, Commerce City, CO 80022. ¡Únase a nosotros en un programa especial con la Guarda del Parque Urbano Isis Rivera López. ¡Ella nos enseñará acerca de los hurones de patas negras, la historia del refugio y nos llevará en un paseo por la naturaleza alrededor Lake Mary (Lago de Mary)! Black Birders Week Walk
Celebrate Black Birders Week this year with the SCRGP and Denver Audubon! Started by a group of black nature enthusiasts and biologists from the Black AF in STEM collective, this week is aimed at creating and encouraging greater diverse representation in the world of birding. Join us in celebrating by heading out on the trail for a relaxing and rejuvenating bird walk.

Public Volunteer Project: Pollinator Garden Preparation
We are so thankful for our SCRGP volunteers and all that you do to make the greenway a beautiful and clean space for all to enjoy. We will be preparing our Commerce City Pollinator Garden at the Wetland Loop! This location is going to be a challenge with no irrigation, so we are planning on incorporating the traditional practice of constructing and implementing Olla clay watering pots. More details will be sent out closer to the project date.

Playdate on the Greenway Sand Creek Park (Full/ lleno)
This month we will visit Sand Creek Park (at the Peoria St Parking Lot) located at 2700 Peoria St, Aurora, CO 80011. Join us for a special program where we will celebrate Mother’s Day and Mother Nature with a pizza celebration and nature play! Spots are limited and will fill up fast! Registration required.
Este mes visitaremos Sand Creek Park (en el estacionamiento de Peoria St) ubicado en 2700 Peoria St, Aurora, CO 80011. ¡Únase a nosotros en un programa especial donde celebraremos el Día de la Madre con una celebración con pizza! También jugaremos en un parque inspirado por la naturaleza. Las plazas son limitadas y se llenarán rápidamente. Es necesario inscribirse.
This will be a continuous Free Family Program in 2025, held once a month, on the second Saturday of the month.
Open to all ages and abilities.
Interpretation and transportation services are available upon request (please give us at least a 48-hour notice). Please indicate if you require these services in the registration form below.
Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required to help with planning purposes.

May Volunteer Day

Biking + Birding on the Greenway!

We are happy to announce that we are hosting another Biking + Birding event on the Greenway! All ages and abilities welcome! Just as we did last year, we will start the day with an optional opportunity to tune up your bike from 9-9:45am (+ learn some basic bike maintenance tips!), start the ride around 10am, stop at approximately half-mile intervals to bird, and end the ride at The Morrison Nature Center @ Star K Ranch in Aurora (address - 16002 E Smith Rd, Aurora, CO 80011). The total route is approximately 2.6 miles (5.2 miles round trip).
After we arrive at Star K Ranch, there will be an option to ride back to the meeting spot, continue birding at Star K Ranch, or to arrange your own transportation from Star K Ranch back to your car/homes.
Coffee, water, and snacks will be provided at the start of the event, but we advise folks to come prepared with their own day pack for any extra water, snacks, sunscreen/bug spray, etc. that they need to be successful!
We are happy to offer transportation services and translation services upon request (before 4/13/25).Spots are limited, and registration is required to attend this event. We hope to see many new and old faces there! 🚴♂️🦉
¡Estamos felices de anunciar que organizaremos otro evento de Bicicleta + Observación de Aves en el Greenway! ¡Todas las edades y habilidades son bienvenidas! Al igual que el año pasado, comenzaremos el día con una oportunidad opcional de ajustar tu bicicleta de 9:00 a 9:45 a.m. (¡y aprender algunos consejos básicos de mantenimiento!). Embark on a fun photo scavenger hunt with SCRGP staff and local professional photographer Lauren Keller to capture the wonders of the outdoors! We will be visiting Morrison Nature Center to learn more about the natural landscape of this area and find out what unique plants, animals, and non-living things you can find in the early Spring.
The SCRGP has five DSLR cameras available for participants to use during programming. The first 5 people to sign up will get access to these cameras. If you have your own camera and would like to participate you are welcome to as well!
Embárcate en una divertida búsqueda del tesoro fotográfico con el personal del SCRGP y la fotógrafa profesional local Lauren Keller para capturar las maravillas de la naturaleza. Visitaremos el Centro de la Naturaleza Morrison en el lugar para aprender más sobre el paisaje natural de esta zona y descubrir qué plantas, animales y cosas no vivas únicas se pueden encontrar a principios de la primavera.
